Background

What is RIS?

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) are programmable surfaces that redirect electromagnetic waves on demand – a key enabler for 6G, JCAS, and Physical Layer Security.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) are programmable surfaces made up of many individually controllable elements that can selectively reflect and redirect electromagnetic waves. This makes it possible to actively shape the radio channel rather than simply working around its limitations.

Unlike active relays or repeaters, RIS systems work entirely passively — no signal amplification, minimal power consumption, and no additional interference sources. This makes them an efficient and scalable tool for wireless communication research and deployment.

Application Areas

  • Communications Research & 6G – Testbeds, prototypes, and concepts for the next generation of mobile communications.
  • Joint Communication & Sensing (JCS) – Radio solutions with added value: combining communication and environmental awareness.
  • Physical Layer Security – Enhanced security through deliberate radio channel manipulation and artificial noise injection.
  • Antenna & RF Technology – Custom antennas and RF circuits for communication, sensing, and special applications.
  • Industrial Electronics & Control – Electronic assemblies for machinery, automation, and rugged industrial environments.
  • Embedded Systems – Microcontroller- and FPGA-based solutions for precision control and signal processing.
  • Prototyping & Demonstrators – Rapid development of functional prototypes and small-series products for pilot projects and R&D departments.
  • System Integration – Retrofitting and adapting existing electronics or radio systems, including EMC/CE support.
